How good is it
What's next
What works today, where it works, and what is still being built.
Works on the website
Anyone can use these now.
Listen to example recordings
24 recordings of Territory birds, each with our model's answer, BirdNET's, and the previous model's.
Compare our model with BirdNET and Google's Perch
Every test we ran, on recordings the models had never heard. Our model was right about 8 times in 10; BirdNET, given the same species, 2 in 3.
Browse the birds
The species we have recordings of, and the labelled recordings the models learned from.
Label short clips
Listen and say which bird you hear. Saving labels needs an account (sign in from the key icon).
Works on your own computer
These need the full install, usually because they run a model.
Identify birds in your own recordings
Drop in one file or a whole folder. Our 449-species model lists every bird it hears and when; you can download the results and compare with BirdNET and Perch.
Train and test models
Build fair data splits and run training experiments. For researchers.
Research analyses
Diversity, time of day, habitat and call types, computed over the example library. They describe that library, not the Territory.
Daylight and moon lookup
Moonlight and sunlight for any place and date. Weather needs an internet connection to the climate service.
Partly working
Usable, with a limit you should know about.
Several birds in one field recording
Works on your computer, but has not yet been tested against expert-labelled field audio. Check results by ear.
Map of monitoring sites
The sites are real places, but the recordings shown at them are assigned for demonstration. They were not recorded there.
Pelicans and fish farms
Built from public sighting records (where pelicans were seen), not from their calls. The data's licence still needs confirming before any published use.
Not built yet
Planned, and what each one is waiting for.
Accuracy on real field recordings
Needs Territory field clips labelled by people, and none exist anywhere yet.
Pelican call tracking
Not started. Adult pelicans are mostly silent away from their breeding colonies, so sound is weakest exactly where fish farms need it.
Our model on the website
The website shows answers our model worked out in advance. Running it on new uploads needs a bigger server than the free one.
Movement and migration across sites
Needs recorders left at several sites for many months. Seasonal patterns from sighting records are in the research analyses.
Live recorder network
Recorders that upload as they record, so new detections appear automatically.
